Fantastic article well said and well done !! kudos to u sujit…I totally agree with u. I have gone to college in many western countries, actually none of them have this ragging curse…! No matter how we advance as a nation untill our behavior and midset changes to match that of other advanced countries, we cannot call ourselves truly advanced !! that is the sad truth…and guys like Manav – the above comment writer are holding the country back by centuries, hope gorillas like Manav go extinct soon !! administration is very very strict. i think sort of ragging that you are talking about is only history now in case of iits.

Even after all the measures taken by the Government,raging is being done in the name of introduction or personality development.In Jaipur’s IIIM management college (now ISIM,) ragging is being promoted by the college management and staff!
Freshers are made to come early and stay after college hours for ragging. Even though the college has a uniform still seniors are asking freshers to dress funnily and college staff permits it!
Teachers have left first year students on the mercy of seniors.we are being humilated.Please help us

Very nice article. I was in IIT-KGP from 1997-2001, and the situation was exactly like what you described.
I did become friends (and very good at that) with most of my seniors, and juniors whom I ragged. However, I am convinced that it had nothing to do with ragging. There are way much better ways of mutual interaction. As an example, courtship for instance, does not involve ragging!
In short, BDSM of this kind sucks.

With money everything is possible in todays’ world.
Serious action has to be taken of senior and junior students’ ragging, they should be punished with a kind of heavy fine and thereafter I feel parents’ also start

Even I heard that ragging takes place at law college’s too. But, why are they studying law, as it makes no sense.Nowadays students are so foolish and they feel it is a pride by ragging? It is just a foolish idea.

During my college days, I had a very good team of boys and girls.My parents were very strict and my mother was a house wife and she devoted all her time in helping us to study.Today although my parents are no more, but they have educated all their children and settled them all in life.
As parents do not find time to watch over their children’s behaviour, counselling is a must for the senior and junior students. Nowadays parents have a lot of money to bribe and get the degree for their children. So, children take it all too easy and they find time for ragging.’

I feel ragging is that only parents to be blamed as they have not brought up their children in the right manner.
All this kind of ragging of started only during these recent years.Especially the rich, as parents have no time for their children, they themselves go visiting to pubs and other social activities.The poor parents only look forward that they chrildren study and come out in flying colours, and those are the children who are mostly studying abroad, and they are the onces who are well settled in life.I am once of the well wishers for the poor and not the rich.Counselling is very important for these kind of children.

I went to Gujarat University in 1980s and I must say that ragging is unheard of there. It was a very pleasant experience meeting with seniors in my engineering college. I guess rest of India can learn from colleges in Gujarat.
As to the raggers, you should hire local gundas, pay them well and let them take care of the seniors if the authorities do not do antyhing.

The TV show “Dadagiri” aired on UTV Bindass is being promoted as a show where “four students will be chosen to revisit the horrors of being bullied on the first day of college by giving a physical, brain, and compete with each other. There will be three ‘dadas’ in three rounds, and the survivor will be declared the winner, who will receive a prize money of Rs 50 lakhs.”

The show clearly validates ragging. Worse still, it says, here’s your opportunity to show yourself as better. The better ‘beast’ to use their own term.

In order for ragging to go, shows like this that glorify it must go too. I saw the show about an hour, and since then have started a petition on the website address given, and on facebook. Let’s please do something to take this off air!!

Reading through the report I couldn’t help but wonder at the facts and the casual manner in which they have been presented without a thorough investigation as regard to their verification with a single minded prejudice against the College – Dr. R.P.G.M.C. tanda.

Let me present the facts as they were point by point:-

“It is also learnt that in 2002 in the same institution, a student by the name of Neeraj was found dead in the hostel and the postmortem was conducted in a hurry and the matter was closed.”

The afore mentioned student was suffering from mental depression in relation to his studies and it is a common medical fact that under depression a person is driven towards suicide. It was a shock to the students and the administration alike with no indication of ragging whatsoever.

2.” In 2004, a junior student was stabbed in his stomach with a broken bottle and none of the guilty persons were brought to book.”

The afore mentioned student was in an inebriated state and in this condition was going about breaking hostel windows and empty bottles. In this inebriated state he somehow injured himself and if it were not for his seniors and other hostel members who took him timely to the hospital would surely have succumbed to his injuries.

3. “In 2006, four students were compelled to drink alcohol and were beaten up. They were taken in a bus and dropped 53 miles away. The bus met with an accident. No action was taken even though one of the students became disabled. The said Dr. Sankhayan reportedly hushed up the matter.”

The afore mentioned students were notorious for their drunken rabble rousing. They were also habitual to take the college bus for a drive in the night by somehow starting it with a duplicate key. (All this came out under subsequent investigation by the college authorities after the incident and as confessed by their classmates and themselves later on). One night under the influence of alcohol they took out the bus and in their drunken state banged the bus in a road side tree at high speed suffering grievous injuries. It was only due to the intervention of one of the students relative who is a prominent doctor in IGMC Shimla, and some high profile relatives of others that they were not expelled.

4.”In 2004, the students beat up people in the local Ram Lila Maidan with iron rods and bamboo sticks and yet the college did not take any action against the students.”

The above incident took place when some local goondas caught two of the students and beat them up causing clavicular fracture of one, that the students got angry and gathered into the ram lila maidan demanding justice. The manner in which the incident has been presented is absolutely to the contrary.

5. “In 2006, the students damaged the college canteen and the owner Naresh Soni suffered physical injuries, yet no action was taken.”

In this afore mentioned incident the owner along with some of his workers, who were incidentally inebriated, abused and attacked a student. The resultant melee that ensued caused damage to his property.

These facts can be verified by anyone who carries out a thorough investigation into the matter including press
and police reports as well as interview of the affected individuals and not merely base his findings on prejudice and heresy.

It cannot be denied that a grievous wrong has been committed in the death of a young promising student and anything said or done can change that fact. The matter should be thoroughly investigated and the persons responsible be brought to justice.

But on the other hand falsely attributing all incidents on senior students and ragging without proper investigation and single minded prejudice against the college, its faculty and students is terribly wrong. Its the duty of any journalist and/or an investigating officer to search for the facts and present them as they were without letting his prejudice creep into his work. Let not
a few black sheep be the representative of an entire flock. in this highly charged atmosphere it is easy to paint everything black while forgetting the good the hospital and its doctors are doing selflessly for the poor of the region.

hello mr vij,
i went through your articles, and felt a mix of outrage and anguish. i also read the document that has been submitted to the SC by mr subramaniam, and it was distressing, how most of the facts were distorted, unwittingly or on purpose.

firstly- what happened was extremely unfortunate, a boy lost his life, its very tragic and nothing that we say or do will ever be able to make up for the loss.
coming to the point. i personally believe that he didnt die of ragging, maybe ragging was very remotely related to the incident maybe even not related.
as has been pointed out in the post mortem report, that the cause of death is a head injury,but a patient of head injury is very unlikely to die suddenly as in this case unless the vital centres in the brainstem are involved, which was not the case here, this type of sudden death happens usually in a cardiac event. there are unconfirmed reports that aman was suffering from a cardiac disease.

secondly dr suresh sankhyan is being potrayed as the man responsible for everything that has gone wrong, by the ‘facts’ that you have collected. but this is far from the truth. Dr sankhyan is a thorough gentleman, and a very kind man, he has been one of the best principals that college has seen. all matters of indiscipline and ragging have been punished by him. maybe his way of reforming an indisciplined pupil is something you dont like and find it insufficient as a punishment!

thirdly many facts in the report presented to the SC are not facts indeed. rather someone who knows about those incidents will find them(facts) hillarious and mock the casual attitude with which they have been presented to the highest court in the country.

lastly, mr vij, as you suggested we must have a law passed against ragging now. but im sure you realise that laws dont change things much, its the mindset that needs to be changed…we probably have a law that prevents people from saying and writing whatever they fancy, but its not stopping you or me!

Being a law student and studying lot of crimes i feel ragging takes the first place….. This act is done by people of very young age… It might have positive effect as well as negative effect… But going upto the act of causing death of a person is really alarmining fact… Rogging has become a routine act nowadays…. But when something exceeds particular limit i feel it has to be stopped or controlled… Here in this case we cannot blame only the seniors but also the college management also… Just today morning when i read the report submitted by ADM to the govt i was shocked to see the acts that were forced by the so called seniors on juniors… its totally inhuman and it also denies one’s privacy….

I am glad that people are awake and are working for something good to change … I feel this has to be dealt with from root cause level… Either make strict rules in colleges or bring about a law to prevent such things from happening again….
I would like to confirm the family of Aman that the entier young india is with you including large number of concerned parents…

I hope that we will not allow this to fade away but to fight until something is acheived….

As a Kid I had seen a shocking movie on doordarshan on Ragging, its images still vividly roam my mind. Such was tyranny, as portrayed in the film, it sent shivers down my spine.

If only you could get that film or arrange to show it to people, its effects on the new generation to come would be positive and heart warming.

I do not remember the name of the movie as of now, but the film was a class apart nonetheless.

This is to bring to your notice a incident like Aman Kachroo at A Dental College in Mathura. A First year boy was mercilessly beaten by the entire batch of Second year students. The incident happened on 26/02/2009 ,When this was broght to the notice of authorities instead of taking quick action they just suspended the classes and told students to vacate the hostel without giving any time. The boy was left on his own and dropped at the bust station to go to home on his own despite lot of injuries.
Though later on the college has proposed to expell the main culprit but no action has been taken so far,rather they have created situation in which the boy is thinking of withdrawing from the college, which not only is going to bolden the culprits but also putting the juniors ( who reported the matter ) in a dangerous situation. The senior involved is believed to be highly connected politically.

Through this forum we would like to put pressure on the management to do the needful.

I am an alumini of Indira Gandhi medical college shimla and have felt very ashamed of the events that have occured at Tanda.It is very shocking that such ragging still exists and was actually allowed to carry on. This is truely a retrograde step. Lessons must be learnt and we must ensure such an incident should never ever happen again. As part of overseas IGMC alumini group we condemn this shameful act and are willing to offer any sort of help for the family to bring them justice.This issue should not be left to die after the initial media hype.

Mr Sam, there is no such thing as good ragging, as there is no such thing as good terrorism.
Rather than giving your own imagined interpretation of what constitutes ragging, it will be better if you check out definition of ragging as per Supreme court of India. For your convenience, here follows that definition:
“Any disorderly conduct whether by words spoken or written or by an act which the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness any other student, Indulging in rowdy or indisciplined activities which causes or Is likely to cause annoyance, hardship or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in a fresher or a junior student or asking the students to do any act or perform something which such student will not do in the ordinary course and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the physique or psyche of a fresher or a junior student.”

this blog is really stupid…I really cannot understand why the hell one should comment on others personal experience…The purpose of blog is to share good experiences amongst friends…not to hurt someones feeling…poor guy pranay has mentioned that he was ragged by seniors decently…I call it interaction rather than tagging it as ragging…there are always two faces of a coin, on bad and one good…If pranay had mentioned that he experienced bad times with seniors, then it was better for shivam to sympathize pranay…I feel shivam likes to make fun of people instead of creating awareness…I think Shivam’s intentions are ridiculous and mannerless…Who the hell are you to abuse someones name…Shall I say Shivam is a PRO ABUSER…will that be good for you…Learn to respect others feelings rather than hurting them…I dont want to abuse you shivam, but telling you to be in limits…If pranay was told to get naked and dance, it would be a serious abduction…but nothing of such sorts has happened…if it happened also could you help pranay…no right…Blog is for everyone to share thier feelings not for criticism or abduction…I too protest RAGGING…only the bad ragging…

I PITY YOU, that your making use of your skills to steal sombody’s blogs and interprete it out of proportions.
If your so serious about your commitment, come out of the papers and try going to some college and stop it rather than Stealing somebody else PERSONEL BLOG and Comenting out of proportion.

23 september 2003,it was 3:30 in the afternoon.we had just returned after the afternoons first hour.we kept our books in our room,sat on the bed and chatted for a while. then me Amit and Abhay(room mate) decided to go to the TV room.We then got up and started moving,Abhay locked the room as we waited beside him. we moved to the 3rd floor,went into the Tabel Tennis room ,only to find it empty. then we moved to the TV room and joined a few freshers like us.we were watching and in a few minutes seniors sujith and Siddhant entered the room.i was just sitting in on my chir with out any movement and with out even looking towards them. They caught Hold of Sharath.G.S,as he didnt agree to go with them to their room,sid saw me and said “CHALO ISKO BULATE HAI” and said come with us.I said ok and I followed them to their room smiling. I wasn’t afraid cause i knew what Ragging was and I had experienced it During my swimming days.so i kept it cool and moved in. Room number 305 which later became my room ,the next year. Sid locked the room and i see a whole lot of guys in that small room. hahahaha.. And i was made to sit on the chair in the middle. and ppl started asking me questions about my previous college and why i joined this college.i got funny replies from them when i said”i liked this college”..they asked me to dance, but i said no,they forced me,and i stuck onto “NO” .then they gave me one more option to sing.i said no again..and Tilak Alva gave me an Idea sing twinkle twinkle…and i sang that…soon there was a Knowck on the Door..Tilak opens the door and Chinchu comes in asking me “Are they Ragging you? tell me,i’m in the anti ragging squad” i said no and smiled..then Sid started a drama fight..Chinchu went out side saying “Tomorrow 10 at Princi’s office “.. then i smiled at Sid..then sid said “why are you smiling? your not supposed to smile,Dont you know that?”..but i still continued to smile..and sid picked up a Cig pack and signs over it as “ABU BAKKAR SIDDQUE” and intro duces him self as abu bakar siddique.,By that time Damu called him sid..then sid used his presence of mind and said “YAAR mujhe SID mat bulaya kar,siddique bula,Kitni baar kahoon”. and he gave me that signed packet and said “I’m giving this to you.When ever i ask you to show this to me,u have to show it”. i said ok. and i was about to move and He asked me to wait and Ramnath was called in and i was asked to intro him.i just asked his name and the rest all others asked.but ramnath was a tall fellow answering every question but was sweting. it was 5 PM by then and it was time for the evening tea at the mess..and we moved out..looking down from the third floor. I Preserved the CIG pack given by Sid signed as Abubacker siddique till my final year,As a memory for the first day and finally i Had to disposed it off . but even today i remember that and i have a print of it in my memories…

YEAH AND THE BEST QUESTIONG SID HAD ASKED ME IN THAT ROOM -”WHATS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF UR LIFE” ..and PPL around saying “JOINING THIS COLLEGE” as i silently smiled at them………

They were The best senior…Those memories were the best..After which they Got to know me well.

Even today i can Never for get that day,the sunlight,the room,Those ppl ,wonderful seni0rs…and yeah,Even today i can sense the voice and noise ,the comments passed ,Questions asked,taunts,the LAUGH the present SID had given,all are still fresh in my Heart..”GOLDEN DAYS”..I now understand the meaning of “STUDENT LIFE IS GOLDEN LIFE”..Those times spent in Hostel can never get away from my heart.its so fresh and green even today i cant believe that it was 5 years ago.
First Day @ college

22 SEP 2003, It was Half an hour past Five in the Morning, I got down from the KSRTC bus at Ballal Bagh, Mangalore, Accompanied by my father. we straight away went to my uncles place 100mts away, from the place i got down. We had a Quick Nap and at 7, had our breakfast. It was my First day of college and i was Exited. After Breakfast having watched some T.V till 8:30am. We set off to the Bus stand. My uncle Dropped Us to The state bank bus stand.It was almost 9 and we Boarded a Neerumarga bus to my college. The bus Started off and the strength of commuters started increasing and at bunts hostel stop it was crowded.. The bus slowly moved on the ghats of neeru marga and at the neeru marga stop it halted for 15 mins. I was restless, it was already 9:30.Finally the bus starts off at 9:45 towards B.C Road and I’m relived a bit. Looking outside the window into the trees and beautiful scene. i finally reach the C.E.C stop on benjanapadavu. we got down and started walking towards the college.. it was a typical village seen. we entered the college through the Hostel side Gate(which used to be open during those days), and we Finally reach the College office. I Quickly Dropped my Luggage in the Office room and we Hurried to the Orientation program that was about to begin at the seminar hall..

The Orientation program went on and on, and finally it was time for a Tea Break. I had a Cup of tea watching all the New faces .. finally it was time for us to move to our new class Room. We were guided to our new class room by two of our lecturers and attendance was taken. It was completely new to me. All ppl had their own friends with them, and speaking Hard core Konkani. I had managed to sit at the last bench. I finally after a lot of thoughts in my mind, decide to talk to the person sitting next to me, and I did. Then we were guided towards, our new labs and i moved with the guy who sat next to me. we entered the lab, and the professors gave us a brief introduction about the lab .I was Shocked when some of the ppl started asking questions about the labs. Can you imagine?, it was just a day to show where our labs were and students asking Questions. hahaha.. we came down and i met my father down stairs and went to the bank to open an account at the college branch.

Finally it was time to go home. I went back to the office with my father, collected My bags and set off towards Men’s Hostel, Slowly walking, looking at the college grounds, passing by the cafeteria ,and seniors. We finally reach junior boys hostel and meet the warden. After talking for a few mins, I was allotted the room. Room Number 208.and I’m told about my room mate. We slowly climbed the stairs. I’m exited. I reach 208 and its latched. the warden shouts from down, open the latch and move in. We moved in and settle down. My father unpacks the bag into the Space allotted.. My New Room mate comes in along with his new friend and introduces himself and ABHAY, from Mumbai. I too introduce my self and my Dad to him. he then leaves for the TV room with Amith.

I talk with my father for an Hour, all the advices and all those things. And its 2:30 now and my father decide to leave. I agree and he finally leaves the room With a Smile, Wishing me luck and Hugging me. i watch Him through the window as he walked away from the hostel. After a few meters before he could disappear, He Turn back and waves at me with a smile. And within minutes he was out of the campus. I decide to sleep. I saw my watch, it was 2:30.and I slept. I Dint wake up till it was 6 and my room mate entered and woke me up. the me, Abhay (Roomie) and Amit decide to go for a round in the campus. I find ppl, playing in the ground, girls and boys ,all new faces…and we walk to the stores. I bought some unruled books and we returned back to our hostel. At 7:30 we went to the mess together. I could hear all other ppl saying they are senior, they will rag us if we go alone hahaha.. it was a new place for me and i was not so comfortable. we moved to the mess and we had our dinner. Its time to move out. we moved out of the mess. Most of the friends decided to go back to hostel. but i wanted to take a round in the campus. I asked few new friends who agreed along with my room mate abhay and we move towards the cafe. Suddenly a girls comes out of dark and calls out my name “Pranay”. I turned out only to find, it was my friend from Mysore. We spoke for a minute we moved. we went into the café, Had a juice, and decide to move back.

Finally, We came out Only to Find seniors Waiting for us outside. A Whole lot of Girls from senior Girls Hostel .hahaha.. Now they know my name(because of the friend I met on the way to the cafe, who was from mysore). I could hear Girls calling out my name. Two of my super senior boys step in and ask me to step forward. i did. two of my friends comment on this. and they were taken aside. .haha.. Finally My intro starts.. What’s your name and everything. my percentage, in 12th,college..and why did i come to canara ,why not join other colleges. Finally the intro is over.. Now The girls Start commenting on me. i could hear “he’s cute” hahaha.. Finally they ask my One last Question. Guess???? ……

Whom do you Find the Most prettiest among us??? haha..

i was dumb struck with that question.. didn’t know what to answer, they were my seniors. I just kept blushing..and with my head down i simply pointed to the girl who asked me the question…i was again asked the same question with “See properly and tell us”…after a few seconds and their force, I look at the girl group and :-SS …looking at so many girls i point out at a smiling girl ..and the crowd suddenly says “AAAAhh Ashwiniiiiii” and laughs…one of the wardens saw this Group standing near the cafe. Sitting the warden the group disperses and yeah.. my super senior come to me and says !!! “they found u very Handsome, hats y all this happened…..NOW DONT FLY TOO HIGH” hahahahahahaha…we finally return to the junior hostel and the news spread like wild fire.. finally it was time to sleep, and before that i made a few more friends, home i Miss Even Today ..

Hi shivam.
you should have asked me before u posted it and gave comments about my blog here. You have given your point of view. i appreciate ur views about ragging. But in my blog it wasnt the kind of ragging. since i knew all my seniors from school. it was just an introduction.. nothing serious was there nor is it going to be there in our hostel.And the tall guy was my best friend. . so i request you, please ask the views and then post it.because the Real thing may be different and ur view of seeing it may be different and It misleads.. so i kindly request you to co-operate with me and remove this, since its exactly the opposite of what the reality was…Please understand and i Hope you will respond positively to me… thanks shivam.
